Chris Hemsworth & Taika Waititi Discussed 'Thor 4' Ideas On New Year's Eve
Thor: Ragnarok was an unmitigated success for Marvel Studios, and it seems there are already ideas for a Thor 4.
Chris Hemsworth is currently promoting his latest movie, 12 Strong. During a recent interview with USA Today, Chris Hemsworth said he and Thor 3 director Taika Waititi were recently “throwing ideas around” about Thor 4 on New Year’s Eve.
“We gave cheers to Thor 3. But it also was like what could we do with four? We could do this and this. We were throwing ideas around. But also, just to work together again. That was one of the most enjoyable creative partnerships I’ve ever had.”
A Thor sequel has not been officially announced by Marvel Studios yet, as the studio has been pretty mysterious about any of the Phase 4 slate. The Thor discussion is going to have to wait until after Hemsworth appears with the Guardians of the Galaxy crew in Avengers: Infinity War (opening May 4) and in Avengers 4 (May 3, 2019), which is still shooting with its supreme cast of superhero characters.
"It just depends on how The Avengers (movies) all wrap up," says Hemsworth. "I finished shooting and now they are going to edit it and see how the stories play out. There are so many interwoven scenes and stories and characters."
"(Thor 4) is a conversation for further down the road, if it happens," Hemsworth adds.
Waititi exclusively told Screen Rant around the time Thor 3 hit theaters that he wasn’t interested in making Thor 4 but rather Thor: Ragnarok 2. The reason Waititi’s film worked so well and was well-received by so many was because it shed Thor’s Shakespearean background in favor of a more rock ‘n’ roll-themed, Jack Kirby-inspired story arc. If Hemsworth and Waititi don’t get to make Thor: Ragnarok 2, the actor still wants to fight alongside Wolverine and the X-Men at some point in the future.
